spring holidays!

May 10th, 2010

J & I are headed to the wild pacific coast for our Spring holiday – this is our second year going together and my 5th year headed to the island. We are headed to two very special places, the first is Yellowpoint Lodge which J and his mum have been going to for a long time, Abby has been going for around 30 years! It’s a wonderful place, and when I’m at the dentist and getting poked with needles and I want to cry, I close my eyes and go to Yellowpoint. Weird, but it works, it’s my happy place!

After that we head to Tofino – with a stop in to Coombs Country Market (aka: Goats on the Roof) for groceries, then to a gorgeous cabin at Middle Beach Lodge.  We’re going to read books, laze around, go for walks, play boardgames, cook food and enjoy this fabulous piece of BC. No cell phones, no internet, no tv (Canucks games are the exception clearly) we’ve been looking forward to this since we left last year, can’t wait to be back!

Got Craft! this sunday! local handmade goodness in vancouver!

April 26th, 2010

Dropped off my swag on Sunday for the infamous Got Craft swag bags, there are 30 of these babies and the devoted few line up very early to get their coveted item. I’ve done reusable lunch bags for the last few – which I got great feedback on – but this time decided to do rings! A bit over my original planned budget, but they were fun to make all the same.

A sneak peek – I did about 5 different styles of rings:

The show starts Sunday at 10am – and has the most wonderful vendors participating!  I’m looking forward to seeing them all! Here’s the full vendor listing – I’ll be near the Sock  Monkeys from Craftworks, the lovely hudsonny and Uncle Phil. Great company indeed.

See you Sunday, it’s only $2 to get in – Commercial Drive & E6th. Come say hello telly!

i love my planet earth

April 22nd, 2010

lots of chit chat on the intertubes today about the wonderfulness of the planet. kinda feels like a green new years eve where we all get to remember and say “oh yeah, the planet!”

Jordan and I watched Food Inc. a while back, we actually avoided watching it for a while because we knew it would change our outlook and lift up the drapes to reveal the damage that some of our eating habits do to our little green and blue rock. But when we saw it, we loved it, it inspired us, we stayed up late and chatted about the changes we wanted to make, we have discussions in the grocery store, and when one of us forgets, the other is there to remind and to keep our values on track.

Lesley at Smidgebox has a wonderful list of local folks creating sustainable and good-for-earth products (I love my Abeego wraps!) and it inspired me to create my own (thanks Lesley)

  • learn to make it! that’s right, unleash the inner Macgyver that you know lives inside you! learn to cook more, learn to make vegetarian meals that you love, learn to sew and make things with your own two hands, learn to make your own cleaning products, learn to do more with less.

  • eat local! the Vancouvers farmers markets go all year, but the summer ones are especially amazing as our range of produce explodes (hello heirloom tomato salad, let’s be friends) the markets kick off on May 8th – find one near you at http://www.eatlocal.org/

  • read your label! this not only applies to knowing the source and ingredients of your food, but the clothes you buy, the cream you put on your pretty eyelids at night, the shoes on your feet and the couch you sit on. Everything comes from somewhere…but where does all this stuff come from anyway? A great eye-opening film from Anne Leonard (love her) is the Story of Stuff and it’s a wonderful tale – and you can watch it with your kids and learn together

  • love your body! my wonderful friend Meghan Telpner runs one of the most inspiring health blogs on the web (if you ask me) and taking care of yourself and learning more about the food you eat is a great start to a healthy world, lots of great recipes for your meatless meals

My commitment for Earth Day this year are diverse, but acheivable! Bike more,  learn to make my own clothes & inspire people around me to make more themselves. I volunteer at Craftworks on 4th ave in Kitsilano which is a wonderful not-for-profit, and we are in the process of developing some craft classes, so hopefully that will be a good start.

Go earth!

7 alternative wedding dresses

April 15th, 2010

someone mentioned alternative wedding dressed today on twitter, and while I’m not getting married anytime soon (I don’t think) I can always appreciate a fancy dress. These are some of my favourites from Etsy, and while not all truly alternative, all would be perfect for the girl on her 2nd wedding. Not like I know anyone like that. Like at all…

the importance of community

April 8th, 2010

since my move to Vancouver a bunch of years ago, I’ve lived in Kitsilano. The little city by the beach, across the bridge from downtown, and filled with some of my favourite people. I love being a few blocks from the Ocean, walking distance to everywhere, where I know everyone at my favourite restaurant, the ladies at the Pho place remember to bring us extra limes without asking and I walk up one floor to borrow cheese from my best friend. It’s pretty lovely.

Recently one of those favourite persons, was skulking about, trying to figure out how to make a baby blanket when she stumbled into a store on 4th avenue called Craftworks. She heard a voice say “do you like what we sell?” which surprised her and immediately she felt guilty for skulking…it lead to an hour long conversation about the store, their products, their history and ultimately their future. She beetled on home, called a small group of brains together and said “we need to help”

And that’s what we’re doing, we started with a big brainstorm, learned more about the brand and the business, made a marketing plan of bite-sizeable things to start to chew on and started to rally our networks together to see who else would want to come to the table.

Craftworks is important to our community, and it’s important to me. I have finally found a fit for my skills and experience in organizing, coordinating, delegating, ideating, and general “getting things done-ness” that I can use in a community, not-for-profit and for the good-of-the-world kind of way. And good lord that is a freeing sensation. I’ve recently taken a few steps to learn more about me, and something jumped out at me that I outlined in bright pink highlighter

“passion will always move you in the direction of your authentic self” – danielle laporte

and that’s what this feels like for me. An authentic fit, something I can love with both hands and not let go. I can help, I can make a difference in this one area, to all these people. I can help keep these doors open and keep the vision of this organization alive. But I cannot do this alone. In the next few months I’ll be sharing our progress here on my blog, I’m going to lay bare our plans, our ideas and hope that the amazing community of people I’ve met since my move, that complete strangers and everyone in between will think about maybe coming to  join us in this journey of community.

upcoming telly goodness

April 6th, 2010

I’ll be at the DIY night this Friday at the MOV, but this time I get to play! Which is a nice change. Hooray for wine + crafting = who knows what…

You can also find me at the May 2nd Got Craft show which is my all-time favourite show to participate in. Later in May you’ll find telly at Blim on May 23rd – so a busy month to be sure! Not to mention I’ve got a holiday in there to visit two of my favourite places on earth, Yellowpoint Lodge, and then over to Tofino for a week at Middle Beach Lodge. Both wonderful, comfortable, gorgeous and restorative places for me and my man.

have you ever given money to a stranger?

March 26th, 2010

this is the story of my friend Lucy* (*not her real name, though Lucy is a pretty good name for her too)

Lucy and I met a long time ago, in a different province when our lives looked a lot different than they do now. But back then I knew she was a generous, sweet & kind person and would be a friend for a long time. We reconnected about 3 years ago when we both found ourselves in Vancouver, on the other side of the country where we had first met. Life was great and exciting for both of us. She was starting some new ventures and by her side was her sweet dog who was also her best friend. She was also running more kilometres than I usually drive, and training for marathons. Running was another way she could express herself.

One Summer ago her best friend and canine companion suddenly passed away. It was unexpected and heartbreaking for her and for all of us who loved that dog as if she was our own. Lucy was sad for a long time, but she found a way to move on but to keep her sweet pooch always in her heart. Lucy, having the biggest heart in the world, adopted another dog eventually who desperately needed a home, and someone to love her. Lucky dog got Lucy, and Lucy got a new companion.

Last year Lucy’s back and hip began to hurt, she thought it was temporary and hoped that it could be fixed with rest and physio. Months went by and her back still hurt, she couldn’t run which was probably the thing that hurt even more. Now Lucy is self-employed, and has no health plan. I don’t know what an MRI costs, but she needed one and it told her that she had a herniated disk. An impossible diagnosis at her age, and one met with huge sadness but determination. Eight months went by of various therapies, doctors, dead-ends and hopeless statements from health practitioners that said “you may just have to live like this”. Lucy can’t walk her dog, or walk for more than 5 minutes at a time. She fell into a funk, a sadness, a dark place where she didn’t want to let anyone in.

Recently Lucy & her partner investigated a treatment option called Spinal Decompression that might just be the thing that works. But after already spending $7,000, she didn’t have the funds to pay for it. She felt hopeless again.

A few days ago, her loving and equally kind partner broke into her computer and wrote an email to all her contacts. He outed her sadness and depression and said they found something that could work. But that they needed help. He wanted his old Lucy back, as did we all. He said he would bike, hike, and run all three local Vancouver mountains in one day to raise funds for Lucy. I cried as I read his note. That a partner would shed light on a friends darkness, and offer a solution to make it ok again touched my heart.

He told her yesterday what he had done & she was furious. But then he said “we’ve raised $2,000 in four days” she was stunned.

So here is where I ask – have you ever given money to a stranger? I know I have. Lucy is no stranger to me, but I love her dearly and want her to have her life back. If you can help, even toss $5 into the pot, I would guarantee that the sun will shine on you forever, but you know how Vancouver weather is…

Please email me at cj(at)tellydesigns.com for more details or leave a comment below. Karma loves you, and thank you for reading.

*UPDATE* they met their goal. In fact, they exceeded their goal. Lucy gets her treatment, and Mike is currently on Mountain #3. He biked up Cypress, biked down, biked over to Grouse Mountain, hiked the Grind and is currently on his bike en route to Seymour. Then we’ll hug him and give him beer. THANK YOU from Lucy.

telly at the MOV – handmade nation screening & fellow makers!

March 10th, 2010

coming up on March 19th at the Museum of Vancouver  is a screening of the wonderful documentary “Handmade Nation” – I caught this last year and met the filmmaker herself, the lovely and talented Faythe Levine. I was lucky enough to be invited to a welcome party where I met some amazing crafters in our community at the most gorgeous home of Kim Werker, her hubby & their pup Cleo.  March 19th will have a mini Got Craft show before and after which telly will be a part of which is always fun.

I’m very much looking forward to seeing & hearing them all and you should come! Get your tickets here

*Update! I just found out via Kim Werker that a few fellow makers will be speaking at the event, the author (uber talented) Kim Werker herself will be there, Erin Boniferro from Collage Collage, and Rob Tucker the other half of lotus events and curator of the Got Craft empire.
